ABOUT

Welcome!

I am Bruna Costa, a Registered Clinical Counsellor (#24837) in New Westminster, BC.

My history with psychology began in 2008 when I started my Bachelor of Science in Psychology in Brazil, my home country. After completing my degree, I gained valuable clinical experience and worked with non-profits in Brazil, Canada, and Costa Rica, where I lived for a while before coming to Canada. These experiences have shaped my understanding of diverse cultures and perspectives. I offer counselling services in English, Spanish, and Portuguese.

I am warm and approachable, like to see the best in people, and am extremely human. Just like you are. I want you to feel safe, seen and comfortable during our sessions.

TRAUMA-INFORMED PRACTICE

I am deeply committed to fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment for all. My practice embraces individuals of all orientations, genders, and backgrounds, creating a safe and affirming space where everyone feels seen and supported. My practice is also trauma-informed, where individuals who may have experienced trauma can be sure to feel safe throughout the therapy process. I utilize evidence-based approaches, mostly Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), to help you with your demands effectively.

COLLABORATIVE APPROACH

I aim to create a collaborative and empowering space in our work. My goal is to support you in cultivating greater flexibility in your thoughts, actions, and responses to the world around you, helping you navigate life with resilience and purpose.

My experiences working with vulnerable communities in Brazil and growing up in a non-privileged social class have given me a deep understanding of the barriers many people face in accessing counselling services. This perspective drives my commitment to consider your unique social identities in our work together, recognizing that our challenges are biopsychosocial. To make therapy more accessible, I also offer low-cost counselling for individuals without coverage when needed.

CHRONIC PAIN EXPERIENCE

As someone living with a chronic illness (arthritis), I have personally experienced the profound impact it can have on mental health. I know what it is like to be dismissed by doctors, navigate a complex diagnosis, have relationship issues because of it and have a long journey of accepting it all. My personal insights and studies on the matter inform my work with individuals facing chronic pain or illness. I am also volunteering with PainBC, providing emotional support for this community. Through the therapy process, we will navigate the complexities of living with chronic conditions, incorporating acceptance and self-compassion. Our focus will be on cultivating psychological flexibility and creating a life that extends beyond the experience of pain.

IN MY PERSONAL LIFE – I love to be in nature with my husband and dog. Also, I love to exercise (when I am able). Spending time with family and friends is fulfilling for me. I also like to listen to podcasts and audiobooks, read, watch series and, learn hobbies like painting and embroidery.
